Cameroon scored a late goal to seal extra time drama as they knocked out Algeria to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Cameroon had dug themselves a big hole when they lost the first leg 1-0 at home in Douala.
But Choupo-Moting scored in the 22nd minute of the game in the second leg to draw the tie level at the Mustapha Tchaker Stadium in Blida.
The Indomitable Lions held on to send the game in extra-time.
It looked like Cameroon’s resilience was to go un rewarded when Rachid Ghezzal headed in a 118th-minute goal to give Algeria a late lead.
But Karl Toko Ekambi scored in stoppage time to send Cameroon in Qatar and silence the whole of Algeria.
Ekambi, who plays with Lyon, scored off Rais M’Bolhi header after a good freekick from Collins Fai.
The victory ensured that Cameroon progress on away goals rule after the tie ends 2-2 on aggregate.
It should be remembered that Away Goals rule was scrapped in Europe (UEFA) but not on the African continent.
Cameroon will be playing at their eighth World Cup and are remembered for their exploits at the 1990 World Cup (Italia 90) when, led by Roger Milla, reached the Quarterfinal before they were knocked out by England.
Cameroon join Ghana, Senegal, Morocco and Tunisia as the five African representatives at the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Morocco put four past DR Congo (4-1) to qualify on a 5-2 aggregate.
A brace from Azzedine Ounahi and one each from Tarik Tissoudali and Achraf Hakimi helped the Atlas Lions qualify for their sixth World Cup.
Tunisia picked a goalless draw at home against Mali. The Carthage of Eagles had won the first leg 1-0 away thanks to Moussa Sissako’s own goal. This will be a sixth appearance for Tunisia at a World Cup, but have never progressed past the group stages.
