Uganda Off For Africa Rugby Tourney In South Africa

Uganda’s contingent has left for the 2019 Rugby Africa Men’s 7s tourney in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The contingent, that had 12 players, captained by Michael Okorach, left at 10:50 at Entebbe International Airport.

Uganda’s team, coached by Tolbert Onyango, will take on Mauritius on 8th November 2019 at the Bosman Stadium in Brakpan.

14 countries are set to take part in the two day tournament – Uganda, Botswana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, Tunisia, Ghana, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

This tournament also serves as a qualifying tournament for the 2020 Summer Olympics, with the champion advancing and the next two teams eligible to compete at a final repechage tournament.

Uganda has won the competition twice – 2016 and 2017 – but were third last year after falling 24-19 to Zimbabwe in the semis before beating Madagascar by the same scoreline in the losers match.

The annual rugby sevens tournament involving African nations, is organised by Rugby Africa.
