UCU coach Nicholas Natuhereza has given his views on what FUBA should have in mind when selecting the right league format for 2020 NBL season.

In a statement issued this week, FUBA said that they are considering three options for the 2020 season, after government directives to extend the lockdown for more 14 days due to Covid19.

FUBA options are: playing a one round with top four teams qualifying to the semis, or a tournament based competition where teams are grouped.

If time doesn’t allow, the other option is to cancel the league.

“The options are very realistic considering the situation we are in,” Natuhereza told this website. “Hopefully it will come down to the option that gives us a chance to play more games.”

“We need to play more games generally.”

There is a wide view that the NBL’s regular season has always failed to live as advertised, and FUBA should devise means to change the trend. Natuhereza commented:

“To be honest the league is getting more competitive every year in my opinion. For as long as everything is normal we don’t have to adopt these options permanently.”

UCU Canons (Men) are yet to win the league but have come close twice, in 2015 and 2019; edged by City Oilers in game seven of both finals series.

The Lady Canons, seven time champions including a three-peat in 2015-17, have lost the last two finals to JKL Lady Dolphins.

There is much anticipation for the Canon City in 2020 and Natuhereza says that he has remained in touch with his players to stay fit through phone calls and WhatsApp thanks to the technology, in this lockdown.
