Betting Insight: Charlton Holds Edge Over Wimbledon

Let’s go direct to the money, shall we?

Plenty of games today but we have decided to settle for the EFL Southern Group G fixture between AFC Wimbledon and Charlton Athletic.

Wimbledon are playing hosts to Charlton but the reality is that this game is like on a neutral venue – Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium (loftus road) which is home to QPR.

Why? Wimbledon’s new home Plough Lane, will be completed on October 25, so they have agreed to host their games temporarily at Loftus road in a groundshare.

This leaves both teams (Wimbledon and Charlton) at equal footing in terms of home advantage.

In terms of quality, Charlton holds the edge although both teams will be playing in League one this coming season.

Charlton played in Championship last season before getting relegated to League one after garnering 48 points and finished in 22nd place for a league that was ended due to Covid19 pandemic.

Wimbledon on the other hand, played in League one last season and survived the drop when they finished 20th with 35 points, a place above relegation.

Charlton, coached by former Premier League player Lee Bowyer, lost 3-0 against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park despite the game being goalless until after the hour-mark.

They are without main striker Lyle James Alfred who has moved to Nottingham Forest after his contract ended. He was at Charlton since 2018.

Zimbabwean Macauley Bonne who was their joint top scorer with 11 goals in Championship last season will be their main target man.

Charlton, who are also in the same EFL Group G alongside Brighton U21 and Leyton Orient, will have their main focus is returning to Championship, and may not fancy a big run in EFL Trophy. However, they look better than Wimbledon on paper.

What to bet? There is some good value in the 1X2 market – Charlton win is priced at a big odd of 2.43 here, and guarding it (X2) may look a safe option though.
