KIU Basketball club president Nasser Sserunjogi has unveiled a three-man board to push the club to greater heights.
KIU Basketball franchise, affiliated to Kampala International University, is home for KIU Titans (Men) and KIU Rangers (Women) that compete in the National Basketball League.
Seasoned journalist Mark Ssali headlines the team and has been appointed as the club chairperson.
Alex Busingye and Laman Napio Masaba are the other two members unveiled in a press conference at Kati Kati in Kampala.
“This is a new beginning and chapter which will go a long way to developing this Franchise,” Sserunjogi said.
“There are very few clubs or none that have structured organisation we want to put in place. We thought it wise to have a board so that the club moves from a one-man club – If you are not there tomorrow, then the club doesn’t exist.”
“It has been a very task for me before, you receive many calls from team coaches among others, given my position as a FUBA President and my other business aspect, I feel humbled and relieved, and this is the direction the club is taking.”
KIU Basketball Club was formed in 2002 and came came short of winning the league in 2017 before falling to City Oilers in the final series.
Ssali says that he is privileged and honoured to be appointed.
“When I was approached by Nasser (Sserunjogi) last year about this I gave it a good thought and now I feel humbled to work with this group of team,” Ssali said.
“My passion for Sports, especially basketball, is well known because I have been involved with this Basketball at all levels including playing at the National team.”
“My duty will be to ensure that the players deliver by me doing my duty off the court.”
Ssali, formerly at UNRA, is a respected Sports Journalist who is also a member at Express FC and National Council of Sports.
Busingye, owner of Nile, Valley Communications, says that this a good opportunity to serve the sport he has loved so much.
He stated: “To be here in such a position where I can help influence the direction of this club is a dream come true. I want to share everything I have learnt in this game and I am sure that a lot needs to be done. I thank Nasser for this great opportunity.”
Masaba, a banker who also sits at Proline FC, said: “I have been involved in Sports for a while, I have been a critic of those running the Sports before joining Proline and I am very sure you all saw where we took Proline FC last season – CAF Confederation Cup. This is a big opportunity for me.”
Sserunjogi also confirmed Journalist Franklin Kaweru as the new club Head of Communications.
He stated that more changes are expected at the club, including in coaching management, player unveiling among others before the season tips off.
The KIU Invitational Tournament will be held on January 30-31 before league starts in February.
