Uganda’s URA FC marks a return to continental football when they play host to Ethiopian Coffee on Sunday in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary round.

The four-time UPL champions will be making their third appearance in the competition.

They made their debut in 2006 when they were eliminated by Al-Merrikh at the round of 32.

In 2015, they ousted ASSM Elgeco Plus of Madagascar at the preliminary round before falling to Orlando Pirates at the first round.

Against Ethiopian Coffee, URA faces a side that finished as runners up in the 2020/21 Ethiopian Premier League behind Fasil City FC.

Ethiopian Coffee FC, two-time league winners (1997 and 2011), will be returning to the continent since 2004.

URA FC were nominated by FUFA to represent Uganda in the secondary club competition having finished second when the league was halted due to Covid19.

The Tax Collectors will officially begin new life under coach Sam Ssimbwa who parted ways with the club last month.

Simeone Masaba was ushered in as the new coach, and this week, experienced Sam Timbe was added to the fold.

The club is expected to unleash new signings like Derrick Ndahiro and Viane Ssekajugo but old guards like Shafic Kagimu and Steven Mukwala will carry the biggest burden.

If URA negotiates this tie over two legs, they face Egyptian side Al Masry for a place in the groups.
