American To Play For Nigeria At Olympics

Nigerian basketball team will have NBA star and Brooklyn Nets point guard Spencer Dinwiddie on their roster at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The player has already acquired a Nigerian passport to represent D’Tigers at the Olympics.

Dinwiddie was born in Los Angeles and played college basketball at the University of Colorado.

Rules permit a national team participating in a FIBA competition to have a player on its team who has acquired the legal nationality of that country by naturalisation or by an other means after having reached the age of 16.

The country also recently confirmed Golden State Warriors assistant coach Mike Brown as their new coach.

Dinwiddie will join several other NBA players on the Nigerian team which include Al-Farouq Aminu, Josh Okogie, Chimezie Metu and Ekpe Udoh among others.

Nigeria booked a place in the Olympics after beating China to win Group M at the FIBA World cup, ensuring that they are the best African country at the event.

Nigeria are the 2015 Afrobasket champions and have been at the last two Olympics – 2012 (London) and 2016 (Rio de Janeiro).

The Tokyo Olympics have been postponed until summer 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
