Senegal started their 2022 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 loss against the Netherlands in Group A in Qatar.

The Lions of Teranga, playing without injured star man Sadio Mane, were on course for a hard fought draw before late goals from Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen.

Gakpo, 23, benefited from poor reaction from Senegal goalkeeper Eduardo Mendy to head in the opener with nine minutes to play.

Mendy was later on at fault once again when he pushed Memhis Depay’s tame shot into the path of Klaasen who doubled the advantage with a rebound.

It was a hard result for Senegal to take in after playing with a lot of discipline for the best part of the game.

But they got too comfortable as the game progressed and an injury to the solid Cheikhou Kouyaté deep in the second half affected their shape.

They lacked sharpness and urgency going forward and were twice denied by Dutch goalkeeper Andries Noppert who stopped Papa Gueye and Idrissa Gana Gueye in the second half.

Senegal now must beat Ecuador and Qatar to guarantee a place in the knockout, and will face the latter this Friday.
