City Oilers and UCU Canons – who finished seed two and one in that order – are just a a win a way from reaching the semis after winning their respective game ones of the NBL Playoffs quarter finals.

Oilers needed overtime to squeeze past Ndejje University Angels in a closely contested affair after normal time had ended 72-72.

Walker Obedi’s side pressed Oilers at every opportunity, shot accurately and defended their hearts out but lacked enough quality and pedigree to take down the defending six time champions.

Oilers fluffed on the line, converting only two of their nine free-throws in a game they made 33 turnovers and missed their team captain Jimmy Enabu.

Ben Komakech led by example with 18 points, Tonny Drilleba (15 pts, 11 rebounds) and James Okello (14) scored on double figures.

Gauthier Badhera garnered a game high 25 points while Innocent Ochera and Salim Kisilu collected 16 and 11 points respectively in a losing effort.

Action between UCU Canons and KCCA Men (yellow) at YMCA

Nicholas Natuhereza’s UCU Canons started their post season from where they ended the regular, beating KCCA 65-53.

The Canons benefited from KCCA’s slow start to lead 38-20 at halftime on their way to registering a routine win.

Peter Sifuma was named the player of the match with 17 points and was the only Canons player to reach double figures while Fayed Baale and David Kongor Deng managed nine points each.

Kijogoo Mwalimu (11), Marc Mathe (10) and Francis Mbuyi (10) all put up great performances for KCCA Men but proved not enough to stop the Canons.

KCCA Leopards’ Cynthia Irakunda

In the Women category, KCCA Leopards beat Angels 73-62 thanks to Irene Leane Nalunkuma (21), Cynthia Irakunda (20) and Leticia Awor (11) double point scores. Irakunda, the dazzling guard also had 11 rebounds to take home the player of the match gong.
