Ghana Retains Ayew As Captain, New Assistants Named

Ghana’s Technical team of the senior national team has maintained Andre Dede Ayew as the Captain of the Black Stars, The Federation has announced.

Ayew, who plays for Championship side Swansea City, retains his role he obtained in May 2019 when he replaced Asamoah Gyan.

Then, Gyan had held the armband for a record seven years.

The Federation has also announced Thomas Partey of Atletico Madrid and goalkeeper Richard Ofori of Maritzburg United as 1st and 2nd Vice Captains respectively.

Partey, who is a target for top English Premier League sides, replaces Kwadwo Asamoah on the assistant captain role.

Ghana is one of African Powerhouses having won the Africa Cup of Nations four times – 1963, 1965, 1978, and 1982.

The Black Stars are pooled in Group G of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers alongside South Africa, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia.

They sit top of Group C, with six points, of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers above South Africa, Sudan and Sao Tome.
