Vipers’ midfielder Karim Watambala says that he wants to play for a professional team abroad.
The teenager is part of the 22 local-based players in Camp as Uganda Cranes prepares to face South Sudan in a double-header this month.
The teenager, a student at St Mary’s SS Kitende, has his sights on earning his first senior team debut for the Cranes.
Cranes coach Jonathan McKinstry will be expected to pick five or six UPL players who will join the 20 foreign based contingent for South Sudan encounter.
“We are really prepared and working on our weaknesses so that we play South Sudan when we are strong,” Watambala said on Wednesday.
“I pray that if i make it to the final squad, I just wish to have a goal for the senior team or at least making an assist and am not scared of the competition because it happens everywhere and am prepared.
“Am looking forward to make it to the senior team because I want to make it to any professional team outside Uganda at an early age and that’s why am working harder because this team contains a number of professional players which prepares for professional football and am using every opportunity available on Cranes to see that I achieve my goals.”
The midfielder, on his senior club debut in the league, was one of the best players last season as Vipers won the 2019/20 UPL title.
Very fearless, good passer and hard working are some of the attributes that headline Watambala’s playing style.
There is stiff competition for Cranes players for the UPL players in camp, with Mawejje Tonny (Police FC), Kyeyune Saidi (URA FC), Kagimu Shafiq (URA FC), Owori David ( SC Villa), Anukani Bright (KCCA FC) among other players eyeing a slot in the midfield.
