Wakiso Giants secured their first-ever away win against Express in the Uganda Premier League after emerging victorious with a 3-2 scoreline at Wankulukuku.
First-half goals from Kenneth Kimera, Samson Andrew Kigozi, and Shariph Kimbowa handed Wakiso Giants a deserved win.
Kimera opened the scoring in the 9th minute, capitalizing on Kimbowa’s precise delivery to beat Express goalkeeper Abdul Kimera.
The Purple Sharks continued their dominance as Kigozi doubled their lead in the 29th minute with a composed finish from close range, following Hassan Ssenyonjo’s low effort.
Not content with a two-goal advantage, Wakiso Giants extended their lead just three minutes later, with Kimera turning provider for Kimbowa to head home confidently.
However, Express fought back, pulling one back through Joshua Musoke in the 40th minute, capitalizing on a rebound from Isaac Wagoina’s blocked attempt.
In the second half, Express intensified their efforts to level the score. Yasser Mugerwa reignited hope for the hosts in the 86th minute, reacting swiftly to convert a rebound after Wagoina’s strike was parried by Wakiso Giants’ goalkeeper Lubega Joseph.
Despite Express’ late resurgence, Wakiso Giants stood firm, denying them further opportunities to salvage a point.
Isaac Wagoina’s efforts were thwarted twice by Wakiso Giants’ defense, while Musoke was unable to complete his brace as Joseph made crucial saves.
The victory marks Wakiso Giants’ resurgence following two consecutive defeats to Kitara and Vipers. Conversely, Express suffered back-to-back losses, having fallen to rivals Villa in their previous encounter.
This historic win not only propels Wakiso Giants to 12th place in the league standings with 23 points but also signifies only their second-ever victory over Express, the first being a 3-2 triumph in 2022.
Looking ahead, Express will face Maroons at the Luzira Prisons Ground on Thursday March 28th, while Wakiso Giants will host NEC at the Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium on Friday 29th.
