Stanbic Uganda Cup: Shaban Wins It Late For Onduparaka Against Tooro

Wednesday, February 23
•Onduparaka 2-1 Tooro United
•Tipsa 2-1 Kitara
•Kataka 2-0 Phaidha Black Angels

Hosts Onduparaka needed Mohammed Shaban’s late winner to overcome Tooro United and storm the round of 16 of the Stanbic Uganda Cup.

Visitors’ Martin Arinaitwe’s 38th goal had canceled Gabriel Matata 19th minute strike and the Visitors were on course to force shootouts.

But Shaban rose to the occasion in the 84th minute to win it for Caterpillars with a fine finish, and garner wild celebrations at Greenlight Stadium in Arua.

The hosts produced the first warning when Matata set Shaban who would have scored a beauty if only he was not waved offside

Tooro United also threatened with a brilliant attack plotted in the 10th minute, only for Muhammad Nsereko to poorly shoot over the bar.

Nine minutes later, Patrick Matovu released Matata with a long ball, who sneaked into the visitors box to score home the opener.

After firing his 34th minute freekick over the bar, Arinaitwe held his nerves and he equalized from the edge of the box via another free kick in 38th minute.

Just before the break, the visitors nearly took the lead but Michael Kagiri came to the rescue when he denied Ronald Magwali to end the first stanza 1-1.

In the second half, Onduparaka enjoyed more possession but they looked so average in execution.

The poor coordination saw Shaban miss from a volley in 60th minute before Matata and Nathaniel Atamba missed more golden opportunities.

Okumu also had several tries in front of the visitors goal area but his attempts lacked sharpness.

With only six minutes to play, captain Shaban made a beautiful use of substitute Emmanuel Okech’s assist with a fine finish into Tooro’s net to send the Caterpillars in last 16.

They join Kataka and Tipsa who passed their round of 32 tests on Wednesday.

Wakiso Giants, UPDF, Iganga Young, Mbale Heroes and Ndejje University had already booked their spots as well.
